Last night, I figured out one of the saxophone parts in "She Needs Company," and while doing so, I noticed some significance in the melodic shape of the lead vocal in the last line of each of the first two verses: "But she is rich, and he is poor" and "But he is young, and she is old." The conjunctions are sung to the same pitch (E), but otherwise, the first half ascends (F# G# B) while the second half descends (A G# F#). These different directions emphasize the opposites in the lyrics: "rich" & "poor" and "young" & "old."
